Last weekend I took the boys on a special fishing trip. We went on a guided Striper trip on Lake Texoma. It was awesome. When we finally located the fish, an interesting phenomenon took place. Tal (my oldest son) was sitting in the honey hole. Even though there were fish under the whole boat and we were fishing right next to each other with the same bait, he kept catching fish while others did not. I am not sure why it happened. I have seen it happen before and it will happen again. It just wasn't fair.
Have you ever met anyone whose life seemed like a honey hole? Everything they touch turns to gold. What takes you great sweat, blood, and tears comes with no effort for them. You strain while they slide into success. You cry while they are laughing. You fight while they finish. Just like in fishing, I can't explain favor. Honey holes aren't fair, but they are a reality. I think the lessons I learned on the fishing trip will help us in life.
1. Celebrate the other person's catch!
I was glad Tal was catching fish! It would have been a miserable day if he had not. We have to learn to celebrate our friends and co-workers when they seem to be in the honey hole if we want them to celebrate when we get there.
2. Eventually the honey hole changes.
That's right, near the end of our trip, the honey hole changed to the back of the boat. In fact, the biggest fish was caught from the back. Favor isn't fair, but favor does fall to others. We just have to wait for our season. We have to be careful not to be jealous because it keeps favor from coming our way!
3. If one isn't catching, no one is.
When you are fishing for Striper, you want everyone to catch fish. Something happens when one fish strikes. It sets off a feeding frenzy. So when one catches everyone stands to catch. We should want everyone to be successful! When they are successful, we all benefit. It may be to varying degrees, but there is a ripple effect that we can tap into.
Are you in a honey hole? Is someone next to you there? As the old saying goes, "Favor ain't fair!", but it is certainly fun! Good fishing!
